SUSTAINABLE INFRASTRUCTURE STRATEGY

While at BuroHappold, Steven was part of the core-team that delivered the BIG-U winning entry to the Rebuild By Design competition in New York City.  The Rebuild by Design competition sought a large-scale integrated flood protection system to address the vulnerability of New York City to coastal flooding.  Steven’s team, a consortium headed by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) proposed a “Dryline” project that created a protective ribbon in Southern Manhattan using a series of raised berms and other measures to create public spaces along the water’s edge. The infrastructural barrier incorporated a range of neighborhood functions that fostered local commercial, recreational, and cultural activities.  Steven integrated sustainable infrastructure strategies, including energy decentralization, renewable energy capture and building-scale resiliency strategy, into the overall planning effort.
